About this version

This is the second release of this application. In this version we made the following changes.

  • Added a function to display a list of installers registered in the system
  • Added a function to analyze and display unused files and folders in the Installer folder
  • Added a function to analyze and display the installer files (msi / msp) in use in the Installer folder

Changes

App

Display and analysis functions have been added. The following is the main window.

App main window (Version 0.2.0)

This app can be launched with normal user privileges, but it must be launched with administrator privileges to properly display all installer information.

Display and analysis functions

Added a function to display a list of installers registered in the system

The app can now enumerate and display installers registered in the system.

The installer registered in this system is different from the installer displayed in the following location of the setting application or control panel.

  • Apps & Features (Windows 10 only: "Home" → "Apps" → "Apps & Features" in the Settings app)
  • Uninstall or change a program (Windows Vista / 7 / 8.0 / 8.1 / 10:  "Programs" → "Programs and Features" → "Uninstall or change a program" in Control Panel)
  • Change / Remove programs (Windows XP: "Add / Remove Programs" → "Change / Remove programs" in Control Panel )

Many of the installers shown in this location are enumerated. However, installers not listed here will be listed.

Only installers using Windows Installer technology are listed. Installers that do not use Windows Installer technology are not listed.

Currently, most of the installer creation tools used for creating desktop application installers use Windows Installer technology. (Note: UWP app installers and installers using MSIX technology do not use Windows Installer technology)

These are examples of an installer creation tool.

    • WiX toolset
The created installer will always use Windows Installer technology.
    • InstallSheild
InstallShield allows you to create two types of installers. One using InstallShield's proprietary installer engine and one using Windows Installer technology's installer engine. Installers created using InstallSheild's proprietary installer engine (Project type is InstallScript) are not listed. Installers created using the installer engine of Windows Installer technology (Project types  are other than InstallScript such as Basic MSI / InstallScript MSI) are listed.

Just launching the app will not display the list of installers. Click the "Analyze the installer folder" button at the top to start enumerating installers. Enumeration of installers takes a long time. During the enumeration, a progress bar is displayed and the number above the installer list is incremented.

Installer list

This list shows the installer name, installer size (Total size, Installer file size, Patch size), location of the installer file (msi file), installer product code, etc.

The installer list can be sorted in ascending or descending order by clicking on the header at the top.

Added a function to analyze and display unused files and folders in the Installer folder

Displays unused files and unused folders (empty folders) in the installer folder (C:WindowsInstaller).

Unused files and folders

This list is created by excluding the files and folders referenced by the listed installers from the files in the installer folder.

Unused files and folders are displayed when the installer enumeration is completed.

Added a function to analyze and display the installer files (msi / msp) in use in the Installer folder

Displays the installer file (msi file or msp file) in use in the installer folder (C:WindowsInstaller).

Used installer files (msi/msp)

This list is created by listing the installer files referenced by the listed installers.

The installer file in use will be displayed when the installer enumeration is completed.

Adjustment functions

  • not started yet

Installer

  • None

Finally

We have only implemented part of the confirmation and analysis function.

However, the extension function is not so much verified, there is a possibility that there is a bug. We will be saved if you find a bug and report it.
